ABOUT ME

2nd generation signpainter. Dad. Chaotic good.

A smiling tradesman working on a shop front in Glasgow. He is painting the shopfront and putting up hand painted signage and gilding.

I have been hand painting lettering and commercial graphics in Glasgow for a number of years now.

Inspired during Covid times by the nostalgic smells of turpentine and paints that I vividly remember emanating from my old signwriter Da.

I live in Glasgow with my 3 tiny kids, where I have previously been a barman, waiter, Glasgow School of Art graduate, support worker, youth worker, primary teacher, bike courier, and practicing artist.

Now though, I’m just a friendly guy who likes to paint things.

.

The sign painter and his father, two generations of Glasgow based, hand painted sign writers and gilders.

As well as being a signpainter, I had a signpainter Dad!

The digital revolution pushed him out of the painting game and not much remains of his output, but between the late 70s and mid 90s, BJ Sloan smashed out some truly epic signworks…

Brian passed away in 2018 after a wee struggle with early onset dementia, but i inherited the flair, the male-pattern baldness and the painty smells.

Here’s a classic piece of BJ Sloan signpainting, featuring all the hits: trompe l’oeil, unique Tuscan lettering, colour blends, illustrative flourishes and extreme detailing.
